Veterinary Tips: Your Pet's Stiff Joints

A healthy dog or cat is typically limber and graceful, so it can be worrisome to notice stiffness.  Stiff joints have many potential causes in animals.  Large dogs, for example, are prone to hip dysplasia.  This inherited conditon, which is characterized by hip joints that don't fit together as tightly as they should, typically begins within the first six months of life.  Arthritis is another cause of stiffness in dogs and cats.  You may notice your pet has stiff hips, elbows, back or neck if arthritis is the cause.  Cats may have an inflammed vertebra that creates stiffness.  If your pet has fallen and appears stiff, the nerves or spine may be affected.  Infections and cancer may also cause stiffness.

If you notice your pet is having difficulty walking, climbing stairs, or jumping on or off furniture, it's time to see your veterinarian.
