Veterinary Tips: Preventing Rabies

Pets and humans contract rabies when bitten by an infected animal or when an open cut is contaminated by the saliva of an infected animal.  Ealry treatment is critical to prevent a painful death.  To protect pets against rabies, have them vaccinated.  Report to your local health department or animal control officer any incidents in which your cat or dog is bitten or attacked by a wild animal or if you notice unusual bites or scratches.  In addition, report any instances when your cat or dog bites a person.  Seek veterinary care whenever your pet is sick.  Prevent pets from coming in contact with wildlife or stray animals by keeping them contained in your yard or leashed when out walking.

P.S.  Report stray animals to local officials.
