You may have haeard about the trendy raw pet food diets that many owners are trying, but be careful. A study published by the American Animal Hospital Association finds that these diets pose a health risk for pets and owners. Research studied two cats that developed salmonellosis from eating a raw meat-based diet. Salmonellosis is an intestinal infection caused by the bacteria Salmonella that produces diarrhea, cramping, headache, fever, vomiting, and dehydration. The illness was fatal to both cats in the study. Salmonella in tissues of one cat identically matched cultures from the raw meat used in the diet. Salmonella can easily spread to humans or other pets through contact with infected animals or by contaminated food, water, or milk. |
