Veterinary Tips: Dangers of Fight Wound Infections in Cats

Male cats, especially those that have not been neutered, are most prone to fighting when establishing or defending their territories.  It is imporant to seek veterinary treatment for your cat if you know it has been fighting because wound infections can make the cat seriously ill.  When a cat gets bitten by another cat, the teeth puncture and quickly release the skin.  Within hours, these tiny puncture wounds close up and disappear, trapping bacteria from the biter's mouth under the victim's skin,  This bacteria can multiply rapidly and lead to abscesses and cellulitis, two types of infection.  If a cat is bitten by a cat with feline leukemia virus or feline immunodeficiency virus, it could contract these illnesses.  Antibiotics given within 24 hours of a cat fight often will prevent infection.
