Arthritis can form in dogs for many reasons. Heredity factors, especially hip dysplasia (improper anatomy of hip joints), are a common cause of arthritis. Joints may become unstable and lead to damaged joint tissues when dogs suffer a traumatic injury such as a car accident. Ligaments can tear within joints when dogs run, jump, and play hard. Age and its associated wear and tear on joints is a risk factor. Obesity is a common cause of the development and progression of canine arthritis. Studies have shown that puppies prone to hip dysplasia develop arthritis less often if they are not allowed to become overweight. Weight control is important for the health of all dogs, particularly those who are vulnerable to arthritis. |
